Over the summer, our team had the privilege of working with Lexi, an intern from a local college. Lexi is currently pursuing her degree in Fashion Merchandising, and she’s got a real OTBT spirit – a passion for fashion, adventures, and out-of-the-way places. We really enjoyed working with her!
Here’s a bit of the conversation we had about her thoughts on fashion and her internship experience:
What do you love most about fashion?
Expression is my absolute favorite part of fashion. You can show your personality through whatever you decide to wear. Fashion, to me, is the outward expression of oneself. Every person has an individualistic style representing themselves and how they want to be seen to the world. Wearing one’s personality with confidence is empowering and beautiful.
How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is classic with a boho chic influence. I love classic staple items and adding bohemian accents to show my personality. I feel that my style is influenced by nature in the colors and prints that I choose to wear. I like having pops of interesting and unique pieces or deep colors in my fashion choices. After trying several different trends, I decided that I wanted to wear what I liked and took pieces that I like from various fashions and eventually developed my own individual style.

How often do you go adventuring?
I love to go out adventuring. Going out in the city and finding new places to hang out and explore is something that my friends and I love to do all the time. New places means new people and new experiences.
What's your travel style?
My travel style is definitely classic with a boho chic flare. I love to express myself and show off my style even when I am traveling, but I also love to be comfortable. Maxi dresses, flowy shirts, patterns, and long cardigans along with comfy flats or ankle booties are my staple pieces.
What was the biggest lesson you learned during your internship experience?
The biggest lesson that I learned during my internship is how important communication is. Communication is incredibly significant between both colleagues and departments to work together as a successful team. When a project requires multiple collaborators, it is vital to the task that there is communication and aid between the parties to most efficiently and completely fulfill the job.
What advice would you give to women looking to land the perfect internship or job opportunity in the fashion industry?
I would tell women looking to get into the fashion industry to do their homework on the companies they are interested in. Finding a company that is willing to teach you about the entire fashion business cycle is a wonderful thing to encounter and can provide invaluable experience. Seeing all different aspects behind the industry can help to narrow the field of career interest and allow her to make a fully educated choice for her future path. Be willing to learn all that you can and take all opportunities to gain a new skill or experience.
